Clothing of the Baroque and a Hawaiian Dress

Anita Ashbaugh

This site is dedicated to the clothing of the Baroque era (1640-1760) and the documentation of a vintage Hawaiian dress.

It is the final exam for THR 355 "The History of Fashion and Dress" offered at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) where I go to school. The course is in two parts: the first is research of a specific period and the second is the documentation of a specific garment.

The years I chose to represent Baroque fashion cover many styles, obviously, but were linked in my mind. I chose to begin when waists on women's dresses once again descended from the fashions of 1620-1645 and ended my focus before women's hair got huge (1770's). It's an arbitrary distinction because the clothing of the 1640-1660's probably has more in common with that of the previous 20 years, and I end right in the middle of the wide, panniered skirts; but the clothes during the time I assigned "Baroque" are, really, just the ones I like the best right now.

I found the Hawaiian dress at Value Village in Fairbanks. I've never seen a dress quite like it before.
